Logistics for the tobacco industry
McLellans Transport Company provides a full range of logistics and transport services required for the international transport of tobacco products.
One might say that forwarding and customs clearance for the tobacco industry are intensive activities.
The natural product tobacco – which is picked from the tobacco plant leaf by leaf – is a very sensitive commodity in warehouse logistics.
Ships are the main means of transport for tobacco; however, land transport by truck and railroad is also common.
The tobacco leaves must be protected from become moist and require sufficient space.
The main problems in transporting tobacco result from its hygroscopicity: conditioning of the tobaccos with respect to their water content (10 - 12% Virginia, Burley, 12 - 14% Oriental) is tightly specified. If the relative humidity is excessive, the tobacco absorbs so much water vapor that it becomes a nutrient medium for molds.
Tobacco requires particular temperature, humidity/moisture and possibly ventilation conditions. Conventional general cargo transport is becoming ever more unusual, having been largely replaced by container transport.
We assume responsibility for all their processing steps and safely store their tobacco for processing until it is required.
In 2005 our warehouse dedicated to the tobacco industry was only a few hundred square meters. Today the counter is at more than 10,000 sqm spread over 9 locations, including value-added logistics like pre-batching.
Today we are proud to say that we provide supply chain solutions to the top 4 companies in the tobacco industry: RTF Company, PMI, JTI, BAT.
